Flying Further - Cross Country Course

This course (over 2 x 3-day weekends 22-24 March + 5-7 April) aims to introduce solo pilots to cross country flying. Ideally attendees will obtain an initial XC rating.  

Prerequisites for course are

  1. Have flown flights (either solo or dual) of at least 90 minutes and preferably longer without discomfort (we are going to fly xc country for up to 2 hours)
  2. Ideally completion (or very close to) of B certificate.  A minimum of A certificate will be accepted if the below skills are to a high standard
  3. Well-developed thermalling skills including:
    • ability to thermal at 45 degrees at constant attitude (speed)
    • able to continually centre thermal (remain in the thermal core)
  4. highly proficient in landings:
    • good circuits without reference to altimeter
    • land within a deferred area (hit aiming point)
    • 2 point (min speed/energy) landings

  2. the thermal strength and its importance to XC flights
  3. Height bands and thresholds
  4. Weather forecasting
  5. task planning
  6. trigger points
  7. energy lines
  8. glider instruments
  9. nutrition
  10. Water Ballast
  11. look out and threat management
  12. badge flights and official observer
  13. 4 x dual cross country flights in the duo and/or DG (weather dependent)
